How to Write a First Message That Actually Gets a Reply

By the Genuine Singles team · Updated July 2026 · 6 min read

Here's the uncomfortable truth about online dating: most first messages never get a reply. Not because the sender is unattractive or uninteresting, but because the message itself gives the reader nothing to respond to. After nearly twenty years of watching what works on Genuine Singles, the pattern is remarkably consistent — and the good news is that writing a message that gets replies is a skill anyone can learn in about ten minutes.

Why "Hi" never works

"Hi." "Hey, how are you?" "You look nice." These messages fail for the same reason: they could have been sent to anyone, and the recipient knows it. A one-word opener asks the other person to do all the work of starting the conversation — and someone with a good profile is receiving a dozen of these a week. Deleting them takes one second each.

Think of it from the other side of the screen. A good profile took effort to write. When a message arrives that clearly hasn't read a word of it, the conclusion is instant: this person isn't actually interested in me — they're messaging everyone.

"The single strongest signal you can send in a first message is proof that you read the profile."

The three-part formula that gets replies

The messages that consistently start real conversations do three simple things:

  1. Reference something specific from their profile. The place they mentioned, the hobby you share, the film you disagree about. Specificity is proof of genuine interest — and it's rarer than you'd think.
  2. Add something of yourself. Don't just observe — connect. "I saw you walk the coast path most Sundays — I did the Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay stretch last month and my legs still haven't forgiven me" gives them a picture of you, not just a compliment about them.
  3. End with an easy question. Not "tell me about yourself" (too big), not "how's your week going" (too small). Something they can answer in two enjoyable sentences: "What's the best walk you've done this year?"

Two to four sentences total. You're not writing a cover letter — you're starting a conversation between two adults who might like each other.

Real examples: before and after

Instead of: "Hello gorgeous, how are you today?"
Try: "Your profile made me laugh — a 'genuinely dangerous lasagne' is a bold claim. What makes it dangerous, the chilli or the portion size?"

Instead of: "We seem to have a lot in common."
Try: "A fellow crime-drama addict! I've just finished the new series everyone's talking about and need someone to discuss the ending with. Have you seen it yet, or should I keep quiet?"

Instead of: "You have a beautiful smile."
Try: "That photo of you at the coast — is that Northumberland? I grew up near there and I'm convinced it beats anywhere in the Med on the three sunny days a year."

Timing, follow-ups and the rule of one

Reply timing matters less than people fear. Answering within a day is fine; answering within minutes every time can actually feel intense at the start. What matters far more is the rule of one: send one thoughtful message, and if there's no reply, send at most one friendly follow-up a few days later — then let it go with grace. Multiple unanswered messages don't read as keen; they read as unable to take a hint, and on a community like ours where members talk, reputation matters.

A note for our members over 40

Many Genuine Singles members are returning to dating after years — sometimes decades — away, and worry the "rules" have changed. Here's the reassuring truth: the technology changed, but conversation didn't. The same warmth, curiosity and light humour that worked across a dinner table in 1995 works in a first message today. If anything, our community rewards it more — because everyone here is tired of the alternative.

The quick checklist

Five yeses and you're ready to hit send. The worst that happens is silence — and the best that happens is the reason you joined.
